The Second graders have been busy this week! The O'Brien County Naturalist came and talked about landforms and bodies of water. The students had the opportunity to use playdough to create different landforms and bodies of water.
Additionally, they were busy wrapping up their unit on Ancient Civilizations by creating Chinese writing books and paper lanterns. The books included facts about the very first writing system. They then learned about the Chinese New Year and Diwali.

TK is learning about families and communities. One of their extension activities is making a Family Book. Students drew the members in their families and made revisions to their drawings. Each student dictated an informative text about their family, naming family members and supplying some information about the chore they do to help their family and the fun things they like to do with their family.
High School TAG is launching a new program called, "Mentors in Motion," designed to connect TAG students with Iowans from diverse career fields. Through guest speakers, students will have the opportunity to engage with professionals who share insights on the success criteria that have shaped their careers to contribute to our communities in Iowa. This program aims to provide students with real-world perspectives that can guide them as they prepare for life beyond high school.
Thank you to District 5 Representative, Zach Deiken, for taking time out of his busy schedule to meet with students this week.
The 7th/8th grade science students went out to examine the prairie grasses along the Sanborn Golf Course today. During their time, they studied and recorded each living organism in a 1m x 1m plot. From there, they worked through a dichotomous key to identify an unknown plant. We were also able to compare diversity in different plots and talk about the importance of diversity in a healthy ecosystem. Finally, they were able to touch on adaptations of prairie plants and their importance in areas with native prairies!
Marble Runs were created by the 5th grade STEM class. Students were asked to work against the pull of gravity and create a marble run. Runs were created from everyday recycled materials. Students used the engineering design process to plan, design, build, test, and refine their designs.

4th grade is focusing on dialogue and paying attention to the 'tag' within the stories they are reading. A 'tag' in dialogue is a phrase or word that identifies who is speaking and can convey their tone, emotion, or how they are delivering the line. The 4th graders are busy working to read the dialogue to match how the character would read/say it and the emotions that the character is feeling.
